Super Liquid Soccer: proper football, arcade speed
Most browser football games shrink the sport to a penalty or a one-on-one. Super Liquid Soccer keeps the whole thing: two full teams, a referee's whistle, corners, half-time and full-time, even penalties when a cup tie is level. What it changes is the pace. Matches last one, two or three minutes a half, the ball moves quickly between players, and every attack can turn into a shot within a few seconds.
You always control the player nearest the action. The keyboard layout is small enough to learn in one match: WASD or the arrows to run, J to shoot, M to pass, L for a chip, a cross or a sliding tackle, I for a through ball and P to sprint. The clever part is the shot. Hold W or S as you hit J and the ball swerves, so a shot from the edge of the box can curl round the keeper instead of straight at him.
The main menu is short: a tutorial, Play Game! for a one-off match between any two teams (national sides or clubs), a World Cup, a Women's Cup, the Chumps League and a Penalties mode. Inside the cups, some trophies stay locked until you win the one before, and the league setup lets you pick up to eighteen teams. There is also a team editor for kits and players, and a settings menu for difficulty, half length and the camera.

Scoring more in Super Liquid Soccer
- Pass before you are closed down: The computer presses quickly. One touch with M before a defender arrives keeps the ball; holding on to it loses it.
- Use the through ball: I plays the ball into the space a team-mate is running into. It is the quickest way to get behind a back line that has stepped up.
- Bend shots from wide: From an angle, hold W or S as you shoot so the ball curls back towards the far post instead of flying across the goal.
- Cross from the byline: Run to the end of the pitch on the wing and press L. A header with J from a cross is hard for the keeper to read.
- Save sprint for the break: P is a burst, not a running speed. Use it on the counter-attack when there is grass in front of you.
- Switch to Defend when ahead: Late in a cup tie, the Defend button pulls your team back and makes it harder for the computer to find space.
